Work-Life-“Balance”

ARE YOU NEGLECTING IMPORTANCE ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE?

WORK-LIFE BALANCE CHALLENGES SPECIFIC TO HIGH ACHIEVERS

1.  Difficulty disappointing others = DIFFICULTY SETTING BOUNDARIES

2. Difficulty asking for help  = LOST TIME AND ENERGY

3.  Perceiving weakness as a failure = MISUSE OF TIME TO FIX WEAKNESSES

4. Responsible, sometimes “to a fault” = LOST TIME AND ENERGY

Fortunately, high achievers have great strengths.  Their intelligence, “big-picture” thinking, and planning, facilitates the strategies necessary to increase life balance while maintaining career success.

STRATEGIES TO INCREASE LIFE BALANCE

Start Small.

Begin by protecting small chunks of time. Instead of giving up on exercise if you are late to your planned 1 hour workout, squeeze in 20 minutes.

Focus on Long-term Health.

The body knows and the body pays the price. You can’t play “catch-up.”  Tune in to preserving your mind and body for the long-haul. Focusing on your vision for future quality of life can help you prioritize healthy balance in the present.

Acknowledge Reality.

Energy and time are both finite. You need to acknowledge the limitations of both so that you can begin prioritizing. Figure out what you can say “yes” to so that it is easier to soften the disappointment when you need to say “no.”

Self-Restraint.

Practice stopping when tasks are 80% completed. I know this is painful. I also know that your 80% is equal to someone else’s 100%. Yes, I’m telling you to do less than your best. “Good enough” will not feel good in the moment…but you won’t remember the sting when you are able to get into your warm, soft bed, 30 minutes earlier than usual.

Write down the areas of your personal life that are important. Put them in your calendar and figure out a plan of action in the same way that you would a work project. If you don’t, work-life balance will always be a theoretical goal instead of a real one.
